Wenatchee Invitational - 9.23.17

Liberty Bell XC - Wenatchee Invitational - Middle School
Location: Walla Walla Point Park, Wenatchee, WA

Date: 9.23.17
Distance: 1.5mi. Conditions: Grass. Mild temps, dry. Course seemed to run slower per mile pace than last week’s South Whidbey for most middle school runners and it was also 1.5mi vs 1.54mi - which actually makes a surprising difference when you calculate for pace.

General comments: A high quality field of middle schools and a chance to run by grade level with boys and girls in each race. Once again, our teams showed savvy, lots of heart, and some impressive speed. And, the pyramids this week… BETTER THAN EVER — what awesome team support!

MIDDLE SCHOOL BOYS
7TH GRADE RACE — 40 runners
1st place. 28 points — Congratulations! You topped a great field of 7th graders from some much larger middle schools. You kept it loose during the warm up and continue to remind us all that cross country should be fun!

Eamon: 9:31, 3rd place - 6:21 pace - first mile 6:20
UPDATE: OK, Eamon, we changed the place. Funny that it was incorrect on athleticnet -- but we couldn't quite see the finish and just assumed you kicked 'em down. Still, an awesome race! We must have missed the kick of the meet! When I last saw you, you were in 3rd, moving on second at the volleyball courts. I knew you’d catch one, but obviously, you caught two! Very impressive running. You looked so comfortable and in a “flow” the whole way and then you obviously still had a few more gears for the end. Wow!

Isaiah: 9:39, 4th place - 6:26 pace - first mile 6:20
We really appreciate the grit and determination you showed in this one. We know it didn’t feel as good as last week to you, but you never gave up. Great job finding that will to stay in the race mentally and physically when it started to hurt. That sort of experience is going to make you an even stronger racer in the weeks and years ahead.

Carter: 10:07, 6th place - 6:45 pace - first mile 6:34
You made this one look easy. You looked comfortable and strong from the gun going off through the middle sections and into the final hill. Great job getting out early into a good position. When you are finishing, remember to really drive your elbows back — your legs will automatically go faster!

Tristan: 10:21, 10th place - 6:54 pace - first mile 6:47
So smooth. You maintained excellent form, driving your elbows and high knees, even when the second half started to feel hard. Out quick, but you are strong and as the season continues you’ll be able to keep up that fast early pace the last third of the race, too.

Graham: 10:22, 11th place - 6:55 pace - first mile 6:47
Another great race, Graham. You also got out good and quick in the first half and you hung in there. We’ll practice taking some quick step surges this week as a way to change up our running patterns when we start to get tired. Sometimes just a few quick steps helps you change gears and keep going. Super impressed with your stamina after the fast opening.

Jackson: 10:34, 17th place - 7:03 pace - first mile 7:00
2 seconds faster then last week! You were one of the few middle schoolers who ran faster this week than at South Whidbey — which says to us that you improved a lot! We know you have high expectations, but remember you’re learning something new each and every week and one of these races the whole thing is going to feel amazing (or almost all of it) and you will love it!

Kellen: 11:16, 23rd place - 7:31 pace - first mile 7:30
So great to be getting over that cold. You had great pep in those legs and you just kept a solid steady pace the whole way. You did a great job racing people around you and you were focused and determined. You are only going to feel better, stronger, and faster with every week!

Connor: 12:11, 33rd place - 8:07 pace - first mile 7:55
Another strong performance, Connor. You made sure you got out after it at the beginning and that kind of boldness will serve you well. It can make the last third of the race hurt a bit more, but you showed a ton of tenacity and still made some gear changes at the volleyball courts before the hill. Another week of training will bring even more comfort with your racing.
Dusten, Sawyer: You were missed this week and we’ll look forward to having the full 7th grade boys team together at a future race!

8th GRADE RACE — 36 runners

David: 9:45, 13th place - 6:30 pace - first mile 6:22
Last week we thought that you should try getting out a little faster — and you did — and it worked! SO great to have you a little more in contact or in front of Bellamy right from the start, and as teammates you pushed each other through the heart of the race. A quality finish in an excellent larger field and other great week of leading this 8th grade crew!

Bellamy: 9:48, 14th place - 6:32 pace - first mile 6:22
Your first mile was almost exactly the same as Eamon and Isaiah — so it’s going to be awesome the next time that you and David are together with those two in one event. Just like with our high school group of Emerson, Ian, Travis, and Simon - there is strength and numbers and you will definitely be a part of the mix! A great forward lean going hard from the start, and also in driving yourself up the hill to the finish.

Kieren: 10:56, 24th place - 7:17 pace - first mile 7:22
You knew right away that you took it out a little cautious. Take a note from David above and try pushing from the start just a little more this coming week. As one of the few in the Liberty Bell group with an over all pace faster than your first mile - you definitely have more to give at the start and will soon find the balance. Ahem — the innovative new pyramid performances however, OFF THE HOOK!

Eli: 11:21, 30th place - 7:34 pace - first mile 7:33
Pretty awesome to be this consistent this early in the season. Looking strong at the start of this race and your sense of pace is solid after a 7th grade year of experience. After another few week of speed the times will drop. Another all 8th grade race at Ephrata this week so a good opportunity to race with a few more of those purple uniforms from Pioneer MS in Wenatchee!

*****

MIDDLE SCHOOL GIRLS
7th GRADE RACE — 31 runners

Stella S: 10:26, 5th place - 6:57 pace - first mile 6:53
We really appreciate the way you so calmly approach your races. We know you take it seriously but you also remember to smile and laugh. This will serve you very well! You were in a very fast field of 7th grade girls — your time would have had you second in the 8th grade race! You will see Cashmere again at Leavenworth and it will be fun to see what happens with the two in front of you today.

Addy: 13:11, 30th place - 8:47 pace - first mile 8:40
Congratulations on your first-ever cross country race! We know that one took some mental fortitude and all-around gutsiness, especially with those pesky shins. Clearly you can do and endure more than you think you can! That should feel pretty satisfying!

8th GRADE RACE — 25 runners
2nd place. 30 points. Pioneers won with 25 so very close!

Jori: 10:07, 1st place - 6:24 pace - first mile 6:39
A good quick first mile and you launched yourself right into the race. Strong form throughout, and a great charge ahead after David and Bellamy to kick things off. A similar field at this week’s meet in Ephrata, so look forward again to mixing it up with that pack of boys from Pioneer. Make them do a little more of the work this time - and then kick them down at the finish!

Mahali: 10:35, 4th place - 7:03 pace - first mile 7:00
Steady again and smooth throughout. The girl from Royal that just beat you at the line will be somewhere else this week, but there will be others to run with in another combined race with 8th grade boys and girls. Keep us posted if you ever need a rest on these Monday’s after longer ski team hikes.

Lilia: 11:06, 9th place - 7:24 pace - first mile 7:22
Great drive in that early part of the race and good that you could stick with Kieren in the opening mile for a sense of team and pace. You were amazingly consistent in your overall pace per mile and with a little more kick to come late in the year you’ll be running these MS races just about as ideal as can be.

Mariah: 11:41, 13th place - 7:47 pace - 1st mile 7:39
A great job in setting the mid-race pace for you and Payten both. Good strong arms, and you led the charge for your teammate too in climbing that final hill to the finish. Another park-like setting and a new course to run this week in Ephrata. Keep that glitter glowing and shine on for another good week ahead!

Payten: 11:43, 14th place - 7:49 pace - 1st mile 7:40
Welcome back to XC Payten! — and a great first race that definitely mirrors you recent strength in workouts and in summer running! A great job throughout in slowly catching up to Mariah and then pushing each other through to the end. Two teammates seconds apart. That’s the foundation for so much goodness on this team!

Stella G: 12:44, 22nd place - 8:29 pace - first mile 8:34
Every race and every workout - so many steps ahead of the start to your 7th grade season. Good form and good arms on that final hill. A few more workouts this week and next that will open up some speed in the middle parts of the race. We do miss the hot pink compression socks, but so great that you’re not feeling the need!

Ayeanna, Grace, Kierra, Nina:
Really hoping that you all will be able to join us on Thursday in Ephrata! Nina and Ayeanna know it already, but these cross-country meets are pretty fun and a MS only meet will be a great place to start for some potential first races of the year!

Liberty Bell XC - Wenatchee Invitational - High School
Location: Walla Walla Point Park, Wenatchee, WA

Date: 9.23.17
Distance: 3mi. Conditions: Grass. Mild temps, dry. Two loops on a grassy course. Slightly uneven footing at time but a generally rolling course with an uphill finish. A few little tweaks to the course from last year -- and not generally faster.

General comments: Still learning. Still finding pace. Still building endurance. Still seeking speed. That is where we are and that is where we want to be. We are solid — but wanting dynamic! Another week of workouts ahead and a little skew towards the “easy” side of mid-season efforts. Intervals on TUES and temp+ on THURS. Keep you focus on the tasks at hand, but indulge at least a little bit in the anticipation of our meet at Twilight.

HIGH SCHOOL BOYS
The same Wenatchee Invite from two years back — but quite a few more teams and a slightly varied course from our District meet. Firmer underfoot on Saturday, but still not a fast course. Great team efforts again and an extra thanks to some flexible race plans with several boys moving into the varsity race again due to illness and scheduling conflicts. We should be little more at full strength in the week ahead - and for boys and girls alike - our results from Saturday still have us firmly in the range of where we want to be with regards to League, District, and State competitions. Ahead of Manson, TCP and Brewster this week - but things will tighten a little more with fewer teams at Leavenworth and Oroville before we hit the championship portion of the season.

HS BOYS JV
16 teams. 233 runners.

Bodhi: 20:17, 81st place, 1st mile 6:31 - 6:46 pace
A different task this week — and a commendable effort indeed with finding yourself a rhythm and a flow in all of that craziness of 233 runners on the course. We talked on the bus about a middle of the pack finish — but we also talked about some untapped potential that will soon find its way. Great steps in that direction with both a faster 1st mile and about a 10 sec. per mile drop in overall pace.

Logan: 21:04, 128th place, 1st mile 6:42 - 7:01 pace
Faster than last year at Districts by most 40 seconds. You like this course, and you looked at ease and fluid throughout. Pay attention to a solid core and quicker arms to drive you forward through the race. A little more work to do with easy runs in the weeks ahead to build endurance, but you’ll be ready to knock considerably more time off of this race come October 28th.

Erick: 21:40, 145th place, 1st mile 6:44 - 7:13 pace
Congrats on your first HS XC race! The challenge was to finish — and you did so in most excellent fashion. A few quick little stops to check your pace, but you ran admirably well for this very first effort and things will only get better as you shake the cold and get a few more workouts under your belt. Way to run smooth, loose, and light on your feet. More good things to come!

HS BOYS VARSITY

12th place. 317 points. 25 teams. 170 runners.

Eli: 17:33, 44th place, 1st mile 5:38 - 5:51 pace
You already said it best — with respect to getting out a little slow and still feeling like the last part was hard. There is a threshold certain threshold and then it’s racing :) Tempo on TH of this week instead of 400’s with short rest should have your legs feeling just a little better in the second half at Twilight. It’s going to feel fast too running at night and under the lights. Nice as well to get Walker back in the mix for this one.

Ian: 17:44, 53rd place, 1st mile 5:48 - 5:55 pace
Another little drop in over all mile pace — and that 5:40 first mile is going to start feeling easier as the season rolls. Another few weeks of work for sure, but these will eventually sharpen for the final weeks and leave you with a little more snap to go with so much early strength and steady effort so far. Still smooth and even in an even larger field then last week. Twilight will be fun!

Emerson: 17:49, 58th place, 1st mile 5:48 - 5:56 pace
Making progress, and a great step in the right direction pre-Twilight. You didn’t end up getting out too much quicker — and that may have been good with the side-stitch right on the bubble all race long. Smooth and steady with no evident tightness in your form. A fun one ahead, but treat it like any other race.

Travis: 18:03, 66th place, 1st mile 5:47 - 6:01 pace
Super solid effort again Travis — and you looked like a totally different runner at the start. No worries = no worries, and that relaxed but ready approach looked great. The later part of these races will come into form as we go. Yep, you dropped back slowly from Ian and Emerson, but we so appreciate that nothing tightened up and your summer hours will keep paying dividends as we layer on some speed.

Simon: 18:47, 96th place, 1st mile 5:58 - 6:16 pace
You said it for sure - first time under 19 min - and by quite bit! One of only three Liberty Bell runners to be faster on Saturday then last year at Districts, and this is another quality effort to stoke the fires for the rest of your season. Remind me to show you a photo this week from Whidbey regarding form. You’re running strong. Pushing. But maybe a little tight. Coming spadework and cont. strides should help to loosen up your arms and fine tune some form.

Lazo: 19:21, 120th place, 1st mile 6:02 - 6:27 pace
Out at near 6min pace again and this is great to see. A little under the weather this weekend, which factors in, but a fine effort just a touch slower then last year’s District race. Middle miles will get easier. Finishes will flourish. Let’s keep going for it a bit with that 6min pace in mind for that opening mile and see what happens.

Tim: 20:29, 147th place, 1st mile 6:10 - 6:50 pace
Out in the low 6 minute pace again but a little more struggle late. A nice kick again on Saturday, but you have strength to give in the middle part of the race. Let focus for sure on mile two. The big downhill and finish line glow will help you in the 3rd. These BIG races are sometimes hard to navigate, so this week at Twilight it will help to have some additional teammates. You were our only entry in the JV junior/senior race last year, but this year you’ll have a lot more company in the green and gold.

Andrew, Cade, Galen, Ian, Nick, Peter, Walker: LOTS of sickness and some conflicting ski patrol. Please check in with us on Monday/Tuesday about how you are feeling and what your plans are for Twilight and Leavenworth. We know where some of you stand but not quite all. Good work to be done in the practices ahead that will keep you on track for late - season goals. Missing just a meet or two isn’t a make or break, but let’s run smart and in the moment when you are here.

HIGH SCHOOL GIRLS
We said that this race was all about the next step in our journey—a fun chance to see how we compete with teams from some bigger programs. And, did our team compete! The JV girls were a powerhouse with all four runners medaling in the top 15 and the Varsity girls won the meet against many bigger A schools. To a person, we got out there and raced and we continue to learn from all of our experiences. Next week, on to Twilight — always a highlight — and we’ll hope for no more colds and a good week of training under our feet!

HS GIRLS JV
9 teams. 93 runners

Lucy: 22:23, 3rd place, 1st mile 6:55 - 7:28 pace
A terrific breakthrough race for you! You put yourself into a good position, challenged for the lead, and held tough in the last half mile. Loved the boldness and confidence and it is clear your endurance is coming along. You are poised for more good things!

Eva: 22:26, 5th place, 1st mile 7:10 - 7:32 pace
Sweet! Last week in your first 5K you ran 8:06 pace. This week, more than 30 seconds per mile faster. That’s huge! You looked so much stronger in the middle of the race and you found additional gears at the end. You were moving. I think you’re going to like those spikes after all!

Lindsay: 23:21, 13th place, 1st mile 7:14 - 7:47 pace
You can feel good about your ability to keep it together mentally even when your legs weren’t feeling their peppiest. You ran a smart race — making sure you stayed connected to people at key moments and competing the whole way. Some races the legs just don’t feel it — but they will be ready next week and you’ll be a better racer for having experienced a tougher race and having stuck with it!

Lena: 23:42, 15th place, 1st mile 7:20 - 7:54 pace
Welcome back! What a great return. You ran basically the same per mile pace as you did in Bellingham, which was a much shorter race. Pretty impressive for someone coming off a whole week of being sick. You look so strong out there — powering forward with your legs. Can’t wait to see how fast you go the next few weeks!

HS GIRLS VARSITY
1st place. 62 points. 14 teams. 115 runners.

Novie: 18:40, 1st place, 1st mile 6:05 - 6:13 pace
Excellent! You took charge from the get-go and ran tough. Only 6 seconds slower than your districts race last year — which was at the end of the season and really this year we’re just getting started with the kinds of speed work that will lead to time drops. This is one to feel very good about.

Gretta: 19:27, 3rd place, 1st mile 6:11 - 6:29 pace
4 seconds faster than districts last year — that’s flat out unexpected and amazing. Great job reading the field and getting out into a good position. You handled Liv’s calf cramp well, staying focused and running strong for your team. We are always impressed with your ability to keep the hammer down the whole way!

Athena: 20:35, 16th place, 1st mile 6:37 - 6:52 pace
You did a nice job getting out faster this week — probably still, though, have more to give there, especially given the strength of your kick, which was very, very fast. As always, excellent moving up through the middle of the race. You are finding your confidence and as you do, you’ll be more willing to put yourself up front a bit more in each race — which you can definitely handle.

Ella: 20:43, 19th place, 1st mile 6:31 - 6:54 pace
So glad you tried going out harder. It’s good to experiment and try different race strategies. We learned that mentally you prefer feeling like you are catching people in the second half. Physically, though, you clearly can handle a slightly faster per mile pace. So, next week we’ll aim for that middle ground — out fast but not too fast with enough in the energy tank to fuel passing runners in the second half. When we get it all figured out, it’s going to be so cool!

Icel: 21:11, 27th place, 1st mile 6:36 - 7:04 pace
Our captain returns! Your presence matters and your enthusiasm and leadership are palpable. You came off more than a week of sickness and still ran within 20 seconds of your districts race last year. That’s noteworthy for sure and you can feel that there is so much more goodness to come in this season for you and this team you lead!

Keeley: 23:32, 78th place, 1st mile 6:48 - 7:51 pace
Grit. That’s what you showed today. Pure and simple. You felt lousy, your legs could barely move, and your parents probably should have realized you were too sick to race :) But, you went out there and you tried, and you tried so hard. So impressed that you finished and never gave up, even when the legs and lungs weren’t listening. That says a lot about your character and in the end that means more than any time or place on a results sheet.

Liv: 1st mile 6:11, calf cramp, DNF
Crazy calf cramp! Clearly that hurt and you did what you needed to do. You were racing great until then — you looked comfortable and strong and ready to go! Even more impressive, however, was your attitude about it all. You recognized that sometimes the unexpected happens and you just deal with it and look forward to next week. Keep hydrated!

Mia: DNS - smashed toes!
We know you were ready to race. But, it’s hard to race 5K with two toes that might be broken. Sometimes our brains are ready but the rest of our body is not — and clearly limping before a race is no way to start. Thank you for recognizing the need to rest — that is not always easy for runners to do, but so necessary. We’ll check in and figure out what those toes need!

PS Great job on the HWY cleanups this Sunday and Monday!

39th Carl Westling South Whidbey Invitational - 9.16.17

Liberty Bell XC - Carl Westling South Whidbey Invite - Middle School
Location: South Whidbey High School - Langley, WA

Date: 9.16.17
Distance: 1.54mi. Conditions: Grass, gravel and track. A little less twisting than the HS course.

General comments: A super-fun first race of the Middle School Season! Our athletes were ready to race and offered a great glimpse of good things to come. Across the board we saw tremendous effort, a whole lot of smiling, and it seems that quite a few of our new racers caught the cross-country bug and will hopefully be a part of the program for years to come. Next week in Wenatchee will be an even bigger middle school field, so lots to look forward to! Plus, the pyramid cheering was impressive and we heard from more than one high schooler that your efforts spurred them on. Excellent teamwork!

MIDDLE SCHOOL BOYS
1st place. 33 points — David! SO much great 8th grade leadership in guiding a huge group through the warmup run and stretching before gathering at the starting line for skips and sprint drills. The team as a whole did a fantastic job — but managing the routine for 11 totally new XC runners in this very first meet of the season — is without a doubt worth some acclaim.

Isaiah: 9:01, 2nd place - 5:51 pace
Boundless enthusiasm and a nice all-around effort from start to finish. Keep challenging the front of the group in the weeks ahead and we’ll find that threshold for starting fast and finishing strong! So great to have two teammates close behind, and you three will undoubtedly work together as a team for many weeks to come.

Bellamy: 9:16, 5th place - 6:01 pace
Loved what you said on the bus Bellamy, about being excited to have completed your first running race with a team. And a great team effort at that! Not quite sure how much you and Eamon were able to run together during that race, but so great to have you close at the finish line. Our practices and races over the next several weeks will have you both getting faster and learning more about both your team and individual approach to racing.

Eamon: 9:18, 6th place - 6:02 pace
Nice! Such great determination and drive start to finish, and your competitive nature is going to be a BEAST as the season finally gets rolling and we get a few more workouts and races under our belts. Congrats on your first ever XC race and look forward for sure to having 9 MS teams in the mix next weekend in Wenatchee.

Carter: 9:35, 9th place - 6:13 pace
A great first race and some excellent drive at the end even though you were a little bit on your own with some gaps up to Eamon and the other runners up ahead. Another big field of 9 MS teams to look forward to down in Wenatchee this weekend!

David: 9:39, 11th place - 6:16 pace
As mentioned earlier, your leadership was key to so many parts of the day. A super solid race for you as well, with an early-season effort here nearly 30 sec. faster than the comparable weekend last year in Idaho. Try getting out just a little closer to Eamon and Bellamy this week in Wenatchee and you will hold on well to drop even more time and tighten up an already impressive Liberty Bell pack!

Sawyer: 9:59, 12th place - 6:29 pace
Super solid Sawyer - especially considering that you were under the weather this week and far from 100%. More good competition to come in the next few weeks and a few more race-effort practice sessions too that will help to make each and every race get just a little bit easier every time.

Graham: 10:05, 16th place - 6:33 pace
Nearly 50 seconds faster for your race pace then you were two weeks ago at the time trial — so an excellent job of channeling some energy into a great first race of the year! Lots of ‘up’ in your stride… so keep your chin down and your arms and legs driving forward down the trail. Great job Graham!

Tristan: 10:29, 21st place - 6:48 pace
A great little pack with you and Kieren and Jackson for your first race of the season. Way to be smooth and fluid throughout the race - to keep your wits about you - and too not get sucked out too hard by all of the excitement! A great job battling as you were right in the thick of it with several other runners at the end. Amazing too that your pace per mile was faster than your 1mi time trial just two weeks ago. Keep up the great work!

Kieren: 10:36, 23rd place - 6:53 pace
So glad that your back is feeling better and letting you open in up a bit at the tail end of your very first XC race. You looked strong and tall heading into that final 300m on the track and we’re excited to have a new 8th grader in the XC mix. Your enthusiasm - both for working hard and for how to improve upon everything from running to better pyramid cheering - will be MUCH appreciated in the weeks ahead.

Jackson: 10:36, 24th place - 6:53 pace
Such a great summer with so much enthusiasm for running, and we’re very excited by your results and approach to this very first race! Relaxed and fast is the name of the game, and this whole group of 7th grade boys seems to be having fun and enjoying every step of the way. You hung tough to that pack in the finish and you too were almost 20 sec. per mile pace faster for this race then you were at the 1mi. time trial — which is awesome indeed!

Eli: 11:05, 30th place - 7:12 pace
Hard to compare courses and times from year-to-year, but you almost broke 11min for your first 1.5mi race — on a course that wasn’t even close fast or easy. So great to have you back for an 8th grade year that is already looking stronger than almost any race from 2016. We can’t wait for you to celebrate more PR’s in the weeks ahead on familiar courses!

Kellen: 11:10, 32nd place - 7:15 pace
A little sickness this week, but somehow your first ever XC race pace was still over 1:40 faster than your 1mi time trial at the school!!! So much great stuff to learn about how fast to start and how gutsy you can be at the end, and you are off to an awesome start. Loved your determination in chasing down that runner in the red & black over the last 500m of the race.

Connor: 12:06, 40th place - 7:51 pace
Finally Conner, after YEARS of excellent cheering and support for the LBHS XC squad, a race of your own to run!!!! And such a great one at that. Super impressed to see you throwing down in the kick over the final 500m. You we’re right in the thick of it with several other runners and no one got away — plus you accelerated away from the runners trying to chase you down. And 7:51 pace for the entire race… I mean totally awesome!

MIDDLE SCHOOL GIRLS
1st place. 31 points — Congratulations! We saw so much heart and determination out there. Our returning racers, Jori, Stella G, and Mariah, were steady role-models and set the tone for a very welcoming first race in the Liberty Bell uniform for their teammates. You all kept the nerves light and free on the starting line and you let the race unfold before you with a whole lot of maturity. You looked like you've been doing this forever! Nicely done!

Stella S: 9:51, 2nd place - 6:24 pace
Great job just trusting your legs and lungs. You were patient and yet kept contact with those in front of you early on and then patiently worked on moving up. You clearly still had a few extra gears left, too, with a monster kick. Just keep choosing to see these races as fun opportunities to “play” with speed changes and you’ll keep finding strong performances!

Jori: 9:51, 3rd place - 6:24 pace
Nice job getting out strong from the start and running with confidence. It’s not always easy to run up front and you carried that responsibility well. You looked so steady and in control the whole way. As we have a chance to do more short intervals and strides, your kick will come along, for sure.

Mahali: 10:27, 6th place - 6:47 pace
Terrific race with an especially strong second half. You really found another gear there as you crossed the starting area at the end and then rocketed around that track. Plus, you were relaxed enough to chuckle when I yelled pineapple, so I know you were calm and collected. Just right!

Lilia: 10:49, 9th place - 7:01 pace
You worked hard out there and you ran fast! Loved you determination and your willingness to hop right in and compete. You clearly have some fight in you and some speed in those legs. Great job, too, cheering for others throughout the day — you’ve figured out how the whole team thing works really well.

Mariah: 11:13, 13th place - 7:17 pace
A really solid first race — and actually faster per-mile than your opener last year at Ellensburg by 8 seconds. That’s a great starting place. We know you felt so-so about this one, but we’ll work on balancing speed and endurance the next few weeks and those middle parts of the race will start to seem much easier. Excellent job racing those around you—there was a lot of good in that race for you, just choose to see it!

Ayeanna: 11:31, 15th place - 7:29 pace
Wow! You had such perfect running form out there. You were tall and your arms were powerful and you were driving your legs forward with each stride. You also looked confident and relaxed. And, all that showed in your terrific place and time. So excited you decided to give cross-country a try. We’re glad you are here.

Stella G: 11:54, 20th place - 7:44 pace
An almost 30 seconds per mile improvement over your Ellensburg debut last year — and this was a longer and slower-running course. That’s amazing! Not surprising, however, given the tenacity you’ve shown in workouts already this year. You will be re-writing your own personal record book every week! So excited for you.

Nina: 12:12, 23rd place - 7:55 pace
Thrilled to see you out there running so well! Below 8 minute pace is awesome, especially on a relatively slow-running grassy course. You went out a little hard and if you can just be a bit more patient, that per mile pace will drop for sure. Appreciated your joy throughout the race — we could feel it!

Liberty Bell XC - Carl Westling South Whidbey Invite - High School
Location: South Whidbey High School - Langley, WA

Date: 9.16.17
Distance: 5km. Conditions: A twisting first mile on grass and track, followed by a significant hill and woodsy gravel second — into a final mile downhill onto grass flats with a finish on the track. Low 60’s - mid-70’s. Sunny and dry ground underfoot. Times run slow — and have for the past few years!

General comments: Another new race and a pretty tough course for our first 5k distance of the smoke-addled early season. With a little hill work and some tempo pace last week, we’ve barely scratched the surface of our running workouts. Still, the team is finding form and learning new things with each and every effort. Some fine camping in the trees as well at Camp Casey, and a race worth returning to another year.

HIGH SCHOOL BOYS
We are just getting started, but its clear enough indeed that we will be a force at the end of the season. That being said, let’s give ourselves plenty of time and space to experiment along the way. Early season times and races - flashes of brilliance and fiery crashes alike - are but a step along the way in the procession towards an ultimately successful conclusion. Three different races this week, but we are a TEAM in which contributions come in many forms. A special congrats to Andrew, Galen, Ian, Travis, Bodhi, and Nick on their first-ever HS 5k races. Excited for the week of clear skies ahead and some more great competition in Wenatchee this weekend!

HS BOYS JV 22 +
10th place. 295 points. 14 teams. 184 runners.

Andrew: 20:52, 14th place, 1st mile 6:13 - 6:43 pace
Just a little more conservative in that first mile this week, and you were in the right race at the right time for sure. Awesome to see you thrive in the final mile as well, and obviously being closer to the front was a good motivation to keep you moving up through almost the entire race! Congrats on a tremendous first HS 5k, and from the bounce in your step we know that there are many seconds to drop over the course of the next few weeks!

Logan: 23:01, 90th place, 1st mile 7:00 - 7:24 pace
No race until Manson in 2016, so you’re getting a jump on things that will serve you well later in the season. Almost a minute difference between you and Andrew today, but I really think that you can challenge that first mile just a little bit more and still have the strength and form to carry you though the rest of the race. You looked smooth and easy in that final lap of the track, so keep that rhythm just a little higher early and the next few weeks of running will develop that endurance for later in the race.

Michael: 24:05, 110th place, 1st mile 7:06 - 7:45 pace
A different course in a new season, but faster this year by nearly 30 seconds then your first 5k of in Idaho last year. Out almost 35 seconds faster for the mile then last week in Bellingham, but composed and steady across the board - and in a longer race as well! A big thanks for taking charge of the warmup and the summer running is looking good.

Galen: 25:16, 134th place, 1st mile 6:40 - 8:08 pace
Another first-ever performance — and one that you will remember and learn from in the weeks ahead. Even with an opening mile that was FAST, you fought hard to the end and will definitely develop a little more sense of pace from race-to-race. Even tired, your form stayed solid start-to-finish, and that is a natural gift that will only help to ease your transition to a brand new sport and some excellent future races!

Ian: 25:37, 139th place, 1st mile 7:07 - 8:15 pace
Great to have you back in a race, and after a summer on the bike — but not so much on your legs - there is a lot of room for improvement that we’ll be excited to see. Easy runs are the foundation, and the workout efforts bring the speed. The running motion too can sometimes bug the gut - and our next few races should be a little easier to time with breakfast etc..

Erick: Great to have you along for some camping and Whidbey Island fun. Just one more practice this week and you’ll be eligible for Wenatchee this weekend!

HS BOYS JV 22 -
205 runners.

Simon: 19:36, 62nd place, 1st mile 5:48 - 6:19 pace
A HUGE first race, and those summer miles and Big Valley Rallies are evident right away. The same grit and determination from last season, but much more ease across the spectrum! And you still found a kick in that final 100m on the track — another sign of inner strength and something that not too many on the team were able to find at that point in the race.

Nick: 19:44, 68th place, 1st mile 5:48 - 6:21 pace
Dogged determination and an awesome XC debut! You stuck to Simon AMAZINGLY - surprisingly - well, and it pulled you to a time and finish that is impressive indeed for your very first 5k. Course and time comparisons are way different then track, but stay tuned for faster times and less complete-and-total finish line exhaustion as the season unfolds. Please also keep us posted on fatigue etc.. You have some natural strength and an amazing attitude. We don’t want to overstep too quickly on miles etc.

Bodhi: 21:30, 144th place, 1st mile 6:22 - 6:55 pace
Tough and gritty racing for your very first HS 5k XC race! A little hot. A little hilly. A lot of learning to do — but you did an amazing job of responding to Tim’s encouragement — and I love the fact that even a brand new teammate can trust the support of a fellow runner and pick themselves up from a rough spot in a race. You have TONS of grit, and a lot of progress will happen for you with times and racing comfort over the course of this season. This was an excellent start!

Tim: 21:37, 152nd place, 1st mile 6:26 - 6:57 pace
Incredibly proud of you for being just the teammate that Bodhi needed during the middle of that race! Talking it up. Throwing down the “you don’t want me to beat you” challenge — these are selfless acts of picking up a teammate that speak volumes of your character and of your contribution to helping everyone succeed in the best of all possible ways. Thank you!

HS BOYS VARSITY - DIVISION II
6th place. 190 points. 16 teams. 205 runners.

Walker: 18:05, 17th place, 1st mile 5:27 - 5:49 pace
Another fine race Walker, and keep experimenting with that aggressive push in the early mile. You have strength to hold in the middle, and runners like Garrett Wilson from Tonasket will be flustered for sure. Ultimately, some unexpected early company will serve him up on a platter for you and Eli and maybe even others from our team. It’s a different kind of mind game than the tactical finish to a ski race, but it’s a game that I can see you liking on both sides of the coin. More solid competition at Wenatchee this weekend.

Eli: 18:24, 24th place, 1st mile 5:24 - 5:55 pace
Proud of you for committing to race — and deciding that even a little under the weather you would race as if you were totally fine. Super solid again with a top 25 effort on this course that we knew was possible — but didn’t quite know that you would be totally up for given the cold. A second race on the season where you looked composed and strong. The feel for these efforts will ease with time, and like a few others on the team as well, look forward to Twilight in another few weeks where you really felt some speed for the first time in 2016.

Ian: 18:42, 31st place, 1st mile 5:42 - 6:01 pace
We said it last week in some fashion, but once again rock solid steady! The 3rd fastest freshman in your first-ever HS 5k and you once again looked unflappable start-to-finish. More workouts ahead to find some speed and turnover for mid-race surges and a more lively kick at the finish, but lots and lots of time for all of that to develop!

Emerson: 19:47, 60th place, 1st mile 5:42 - 6:22 pace
One race at a time. Better than last week for sure and like many MANY things for this entire boy’s team, your efforts will begin to coalesce into a more solid and competitive whole. Pleased with the early rhythm and flow. Remember to keep those shoulders down and find some snap in the later stages of a race. You took a nice jump forwards at Twilight last season, so day-by-day and run-by-run without making too much of any one thing. Totally confident in your ability to have it all together when in matters later on.

Cade: 20:01, 63rd place, 1st mile 5:35 - 6:27 pace
As mentioned on the bus, a strong and solid first mile with a bad patch in the middle that you conquered late. Running with decidedly more flow and power into the finish. Workouts this week plus another race and some cooler temps will start to bring us into mid-season form. One race at a time with a continued positive look towards the State meet course where your experience and leadership will be just what we need as a team with high podium aspirations.

Travis: 20:06, 67th place, 1st mile 6:06 - 6:28 pace
Accomplishments can be measured many ways, and this very first HS 5k XC race should count for sure as a definite success. We all know that faster times will come and that you will place higher and approach that starting line with more calm and confidence — but you made lemonade out of lemons on Saturday — and you should be proud for sure of getting to the line and for looking like one of our strongest runners on the day in that final mile of the race!

Lazo: 20:39, 81st place, 1st mile 6:06 - 6:39 pace
Just a touch slower pace per mile then you had in Idaho last year, but a faster first mile by over 20 seconds. To have you starting a 5k faster than last year - this early in the season - is a great sign of things to come. You still look relaxed and composed, but are naturally starting quicker. Another year, another step forward. Keep going with the flow and find some mid-race surges to propel you towards your typically strong final mile push.

Peter: 21:00, 88th place, 1st mile 6:06 - 6:46 pace
Out quick compared to last year this same weekend in Idaho (6:21) — and it’s great to try and recapture that early rhythm and mid-race pain tolerance that was so successful last year. The trip - that happens - and you can be confident that late race endurance will evolve appropriately as well. Another few weeks of actual running workouts plus a few more races under the belt, and your junior strength and 3rd year experience will start to pay exponential dividends.

HIGH SCHOOL GIRLS
My, oh, my! It is so fun to watch you all! You tackle any challenge thrown your way with speed and grace (and a whole lot of grit). With most of you feeling under the weather, everyone battling heat and a very long wait until your races, and with us tossing you into the big school division or a 200+ runner JV mixed school division, you would think this paragraph would be a sort of upbeat message about keeping your chins up and things will get better. But that pep talk is not necessary. You rocked it! All of you — from JV to Varsity— showed no fear in competing under any circumstances. You are quite simply super tough and in the best way possible determinedly competitive. We approached this one thinking about the Latin root of the word compete — which is competere — which means “to come together to seek.” It’s still early in the season and this journey we are on. It’s important to seek answers together — about what warm ups work, what race strategies inspire, what you like and what you need to work on. We learned a ton, individually and as a group, and we’ll look forward to building from that in the weeks to come. Most of all, though, we learned you all are, as a team (and by that we mean ALL of you) a true force to be reckoned with!

HS GIRLS JV
219 runners

Lindsay: 24:13, 35th place, 1st mile 7:12 - overall 7:47 pace
You looked so good in this race. Completely steady and strong. You must have loved that hill in the woods because you just never seemed to slow down and in fact, you moved up several places after the mile. You ran a similar per mile pace to last week on this week’s much longer and much slower-running course. That’s impressive and such a good sign for the weeks ahead. Hope you are still smiling about this one because it was a good one!

Eva: 25:10, 62nd place, 1st mile 7:30 - 8:06 pace
Pretty impressive for your first-ever high school cross-country 5K and only your 9th or 10th run in the last month. Your running comfort will increase each week and we’ll get those knees figured out so they aren’t driving you crazy. Just keep believing. It’s going to feel better every race and now you know you can do it!

HS GIRLS VARSITY - DIVISION I
3rd place. 113 points. 12 teams. 87 runners.

Novie: 19:29, 3rd place, 1st mile 6:01 - 6:16 pace
You really put it out there today. So incredible that you felt under the weather but can still pull off such a focused and physically tough effort. We talked about picking a race strategy that would bring you joy—and we hope that you had fun out there competing. We love that your default is to choose to believe things will be good and that you’d rather just go for it. You are a smart racer and that mindset of abundance will always serve you well. Thanks, as always, for being one of the best team cheerleaders and positive presences at the finish line.

Liv: 20:38, 8th place, 1st mile 6:11 - 6:38 pace
So excited for you, Liv. Not just for a truly phenomenal running race — which, by the way, was executed with the race smarts of someone much more experienced and with guts any one would admire — but for keeping it cool in the 40 minutes before the race. Once we got that water over the head flowing, you just settled in and started to believe this really was one big party. And, once you started enjoying the opportunity before you, you just embraced it and ran like crazy! We’ll aim to keep finding that groove each week — and then, well, watch out world!

Gretta: 20:43, 11th place, 1st mile 6:11 - 6:40 pace
We know you were less fond of the heat and the long pre-race wait, and that you were somewhat frustrated with how you felt out there. But we also hope, that you can see what a gritty and amazing performance this was on a slow-running course. We learned we can figure out how to make sure you are eating and drinking a bit more before later race starts and we also learned that even when you are fighting with discomfort, you are always in the race. That’s something to tuck away in the back of your mind and to pull out the next time you sense things are a little off. Even when they are, you can never count Gretta out. You’re just too tough.

Ella: 22:35, 49th place, 1st mile 6:55 - 7:16 pace
Admire the way you approached this race — you appeared so calm and go-with-the-flow. You went out smart and steady and then after a mile just started eating people and places up in front of you. You looked so strong when you hit the track at the end — like you wanted a whole other half mile to keep gobbling up the runners in front of you! Congratulations!

Athena: 22:44, 52nd place, 1st mile 6:55 - 7:19 pace
A great first-race-of-the-season effort. You showed your classic Athena approach, taking it out conservatively and then turning on the engines in the middle of the race. You looked strong, had a powerful stride throughout, and you ran the downhill section exceptionally well. Your lungs and legs will gain strength and ease each week. Remember, historically, the work we do week-to-week has a way of adding up to a great end of the season.

Keeley: 23:52, 68th place, 1st mile 6:55 - 7:41 pace
Another first in the books — this one your first high school 5K cross-country race. Way to go! Loved your approach to this whole process. You kept positive throughout all of it — from the early morning to the warm up to the race itself and even after. You will gain confidence each week as you figure out how you can best tackle 5K for you. It was cool to watch you experiment with different surges here and there and good for you for trying to kick before the track!

Lucy: 24:37, 70th place, 1st mile 6:55 - 7:55 pace
It is so much fun to watch you when you hit a track — just all flow and ease. Your stride just knows what to do. We’ll work now on how to find those same track gear changes when you are out on the hills and trails. You’ve totally got it within you. You already looked stronger and more confident this week. Next week, even more, we’re sure of it!

Mia:
It’s completely ok. This one didn’t go as planned but that’s all right. We learn and we take that learning and help ourselves grow for the next opportunity.

Icel and Lena: Thanks for being there. You both felt lousy and it’s no fun being sick on a camping trip with 9 hours of bus riding tossed in. But, you never complained and you were amazingly supportive of your teammates. You were smart to listen to what your bodies needed and your patience will pay off. We’ll be psyched to have you back in full force soon!

Sehome Invitational - 9.9.17

Liberty Bell XC - Sehome Invite - High School
Location: Civic Stadium, Bellingham, WA

Date: 9.9.17
Distance: 2mi. Conditions: A rolling figure-8 style loop over a mix of grass, track, and hard-packed gravel trail. 60ish degrees and light to moderate rain throughout the day. AMAZINGLY refreshing!

General comments: A new format for racing with organization by grade-level — so, freshman girls, freshman boys, sophomore girls, etc.. There was an additional JV boys race with a mix of age groups. As one of the smallest schools in attendance (by far!), we still had representation in all 9 different races. Awesome stuff and so great to have such a breadth of experience to work with right from the start!

HIGH SCHOOL BOYS --
As we said on the bus, the best part about this weekend was the fact that we were running a race in fresh air. Period. With Ellensburg cancelled due to smoke and air-quality issues - and our first week of after-school running altered so substantially as well — it was a simple pleasure just to be outside and soaking up some rain! Saturday morning in Bellingham was our first day actually running together as a team since Friday, September 1st — and we still competed remarkably well in all manner of races. Fingers crossed for a more normal week ahead, but we will make it work no matter what!

Eli: 11:04, 15th place - Senior Boys, 1st mile 5:21 - 5:32 pace
OK, we talked about a more “Eli” approach to racing and I hope that you felt like it worked. It looked great from the coaching side, and you carried yourself relaxed and strong with some good moves to jog the rhythm and to compete with that 18-13th kind of position at various points during the race. Ironically, your first mile on this course was even a few seconds faster than your first mile at Ellensburg last year, so a great sign that you are strong and able to thrive on a decidedly hillier and slower course. A great start to the season!

Walker: 11:04, 12th place - Sophomore Boys, 1st mile 5:24 - 5:32 pace
Way to get out and challenge the first race of the year! Right into the thick of it early and you fought hard to keep that front group from gapping you into the second lap. Great downhill running and I’m sure that you were solid on the ups as well even if you would have liked them just a bit longer. Good things ahead with an extra mile to run next week. Your base is super solid and it’ll be fun to pair that with even more speed as the season unfolds.

Ian: 11:19, 6th place - Freshman Boys, 1st mile 5:34 - 5:40 pace
A huge first race Ian — and an awesome sign of good things ahead for LBHS boy’s XC! Steady. I mean just incredibly steady! Out in 6th and running smooth and strong the entire way. Glad to hear that you enjoyed the feeling of racing in spikes, and they will be even better in the next few weeks ahead when we trade the gravel paths for 90-100% grass and sorter dirt.

Travis: 11:50, 15th place - Freshman Boys, 1st mile 5:34 - 5:55 pace
Solid and well done — esp. with pushing through the tight calves that plagued you in that second lap. A little bit using the spikes for the first time, and also just an adaptation that will happen quickly to racing speeds and mid-race “hurt”. In our next few races (with all of the age-groups back together) we should have an excellent pack of green and gold and it will be great for everyone to have 3 or 4 of you learning how to work together throughout a race. Exciting stuff all around!

Emerson: 12:09, 51st place - Junior Boys, 1st mile 5:38 - 6:05 pace
A reminder going back to last year that you encountered that side stitch for a race or two — or maybe even with it coming and going a bit - before finally getting over the hump for good in the final 3 weeks of the season. Our workouts will begin to tap into a similar systems soon and that should help too.SO many good miles under your belt all summer and remember those shorter speed sessions in Big Valley to fuel your positive vibes in the weeks ahead. Let’s practice running on “feel” and focus on that tall snappy rhythm that feels so right over 800m.

Lazo: 12:46, 70th place - Junior Boys, 1st mile 6:12 - 6:23 pace
A slightly slower opening mile (4 sec.) but a faster overall pace then last year’s race at Ellensburg — on arguably a much harder course (more hills, more sharp turns and changes of momentum). Great to have you right back on form from an awesome sophomore season and happy as well to have you right in the mix from the get-go with your usual strong and steady second half of racing. Aspirations for many more good performance to come!

Andrew: 12:58, 63rd place - Freshman Boys, 1st mile 6:03 - 6:29 pace
Out quick, but fighting tough through the middle part of the race. Next week you’ll have an even bigger crowd to catch a ride with mid-race. Pair that with perhaps a little more conservation of energy in the first mile (esp. for the 5k distance) and you will be on a good path for learning even more about racing the longer distance in the next two weeks.

Tim: 13:06, 71st place - Senior Boys, 1st mile 6:15 - 6:33 pace
Out 15 seconds faster for the opening mile of your first race - as compared to last year at Ellensburg - and your overall pace was 15 sec. faster as well. This was a much hillier course with lots of tight turns and slower sections. Strong and steady for now, and next week you’ll be surrounded by a few more teammates to help push and guide the pace right from the start. Eyes up, eyes up and great to have you back in an great early season groove.

Michael: 16:05, 103rd place - JV Boys, 1st mile 7:40 - 8:03 pace
After a great summer of Big Valley Rallies and way more consistent miles, this was a strong and steady debut on a hilly and challenging course. That 7:40 opening mile is perfect for now, and in the next week or two the second mile will start to come down as the interval workouts build a midseason tolerance for pace. You’ll have a few more Liberty Bell teammates in the mix next race as well and off we go!

*****

Logan, Simon, Nick, Stephanie, Eva — An extended warm-up and cool-down with 2 x 1000m at approximate race pace sandwiched between. Some welcome hard work in a running rhythm after an entire week spent indoors. Well done all around and thank you for the excellent efforts!

HIGH SCHOOL GIRLS --
A great first meet! We faced the day recognizing that this was just the beginning of our cross-country journey. As in all beginnings, we were excited and a bit nervous, eager and a bit uncertain, and most of all, so grateful to get going on what will undoubtedly be an amazing and inspiring season. It was awesome to see you all support each other — at every starting line and finish line and so awesome for our veteran runners to share pep talks and cheers with our freshman. Though you didn’t get a chance to run as a team all together in the same race, you sure were a team out there. You found the joy. Now just keep riding that wave.

Novie: 11:51, 1st place - Sophomore Girls, 1st mile 5:57 - 5:56 pace
A fine season debut and actually the second fastest time of any age category on the day (and had you been in the same race as the junior from Bellingham High who ran just seconds faster, we certainly would never bet against you!) Love the way you were patient and confident and you used that downhill to just change gears and change the race. You made it look fun!

Gretta: 12:31, 3rd place - Sophomore Girls, 1st mile 6:05 - 6:16 pace
A truly inspired performance. You were “locked in” and focused the whole way. Patient and not too crazy out the first quarter mile and then you just kept the hammer down the whole time thereafter. You are running so strong and if you’d had another mile to go, I think you would have eaten up more ground toward 2nd.

Liv: 13:14, 5th place - Freshman Girls, 1st mile 6:20 - 6:37 pace
Good for you for fighting those nerves and running a gutsy race. Now you’ve got one done and you can enter the next starting line more relaxed. Super excited, however, with the way you seemed to just set those nerves aside after the gun went off and you just raced. We’re excited to see you get faster and more confident each week.

Keeley: 14:33, 18th place - Freshman Girls, 1st mile 6:59 - 7:17 pace
Congrats on the first High School race. You seemed to take it all in and roll with it. You got out well and worked hard with a group of girls throughout the race, never giving up. Your kick will come with time and you will only feel stronger and stronger. It’s going to be a good season!

Mia: 14:48, 33rd place - Senior Girls, 1st mile 7:13 - 7:24 pace
So excited to have you on the team and even better to celebrate with you at the finish line. You did such a nice job of really racing the girls around you. You worked the downs and the ups and you figured out how to over-rule any voices of doubt. This is something to be very excited about and we can’t wait to help you meet your goals this season!

Lucy: 15:04, 41st place - Junior Girls, 1st mile 6:59 - 7:32 pace
In addition to the memorable honor of getting to sound the horn for the start of the boys race, you also made a splash in your first race of the season. Loved how cool and collected you were at the start — your pep talk, too, to the Freshman was simply awesome. You got right into the race and you fought the whole way. You’re going to be stronger and stronger every week and soon enough you’ll be where you want to be!

Lindsay: 15:33, 42nd place - Freshman Girls, 1st mile 7:23 - 7:47 pace
A solid opening race for you. You got out into a good group and you kept going after it the whole way. You are going to like 5K even better, we suspect and we’ll experiment more with which race strategies work best. We’re certain that you are only going to get stronger and faster as we get a chance to actually run again with the weather. You were also a super-supportive teammate throughout the day—thank you!

Lena: 15:44, 46th place - Freshman Girls, 1st mile 7:35, 7:52 pace
Bolder than you wanted to be — and it worked! So glad you just trusted yourself and threw yourself into the thick of the race. It actually looked like you were smiling during the race as you passed those around you or worked on looking ahead. Great job just racing and not thinking too much. You are going to have a season full of PRs we suspect!
