NCR XC #5 League Meet @ Manson 3/24/21

NCR XC #5 League Meet @ Manson 3/24/21

RACE COURSE: Wapato Point, Manson, WA. 5k. A pretty stiff breeze off of the lake, but short grass on firm ground and generally quick conditions again compared to normal fall running. Changes to the course created more loops on the southern neighborhood gravel path.

HS GIRLS: 21 Finishers, 1 full team (Manson).
You did the LBHS Girls XC tradition proud with your efforts at this League Meet. While we weren’t able to field a full team, had we been able to, it sure seems like we could have defended our League title. Our 3 racers were strong and unflappable and they carried with them the spirits of our injured runners who sure wish they could have been out there. Sometimes being on a team is about team cheers and team victories, but it is always about supporting each other no matter what. The LBHS girls team has always known how to do that so well.

Liv: 22:37, 3rd place. 1st Mile: 6:57, Overall Pace: 7:17
In this last race of your “childhood,” you showed so much grit and maturity. You practiced restraint at the beginning and so much tenacity running that whole second half relatively alone. I know you still didn’t feel great, but you looked smooth and ran tall and strong and you kept the knee and elbow tempo quick. It was awesome to see you get a boost from teammate Sandra when you crossed paths at the end of the race. You’re an amazing runner – athlete all in all – and you sure know how to endure the pain and just keep going. Next week’s going to feel great.

Lena: 24:12, 6th place. 1st Mile: 7:18, Overall Pace: 7:47
There is so much here to be amazed by. You got out well and were racing from the start. Then, that pesky side stitch started and when I saw you on the big downhill, I will admit I was worried. The next time I saw you about half a mile later powering up the big hill, you looked like a totally new runner. Whatever you did in between to manage the stitch and keep yourself calm and in the race was perfect – and such a wonderful sign that you really do know what you need. That, more than any place or time means a lot to me as a coach. It was just plain fun to watch you run that last half and when you made your move going into the finish you never looked back. Take that with you to your life after LBHS. One more XC race in green to go!

Sandra: 26:59, 13th place. 1st Mile: 8:48, Overall Pace: 8:41
Under 27 and another PR. Also another race where your overall pace is quite a bit faster than your first mile. You thrive in catching people as the race goes on. It takes confidence to run that way and I feel like we could watch your confidence grow throughout the race. The first time up the hill you got stuck behind some runners and I just knew that the next time I would see you, they would be in the distant past. I believe you still have even more PR in you and next week will be a great time to give just a little bit more (not much but a little) in the first mile and take off even more time!

Leki and Keeley: Thanks so much being there, taking great mile splits, and doing the hard work of showing up for your team even when you can’t race yourself. It’s not easy but you handled it with optimism and heart and we hope you know that your presence makes the whole scene more fun!

Ayeanna and Payten: We hope you are healing up and we’ll look forward to seeing you soon! You both are important to this team, too, and we miss you!

HS BOYS: 5k. 43 Finishers.
If we turned a corner at Wenatchee, then this week showed the rest of the League who we are... and will continue to be in the years ahead: smart, tough and fast! You all are young but running like veterans. SO much patience, poise and grit out there. It was really fun to watch :) On the performance list “hypothetical meet” we should have finished 4th, but that is why you run the race. Define yourself in the moment. Race what lies ahead of you. And even more fun and impressive that your racing was to hear how well you supported your teammates as soon as your races were done. Congrats to all. One more to go and you are ready!

PS Sorry Will and Jackson. My photos of your guys were ALL totally blurry. Next week!

Aksel: 18:35, 3rd place. First mile 5:52 - 5:59 pace overall.
Another race run really patient -- nearly earning another PR in the process but definitely making a point and showing once again that you can move up through a race with confidence and poise. Way too many older runners went out too fast, and you steadily ate them up. This has been a short season but you are making the best of it. Fun things ahead for track with all of this base training and strength from the 5k racing. Now we get to work on speed!

Will: 18:59, 6th place. 1st mile 5:57 - 6:07 pace overall.
Awesome to have you back in the line up and you too showed lots of poise in not getting sucked along in that quicker early mile. Runners like Chase and others paid a serious price for following or setting the pace for Grant and Miguel (Manson and Oroville) while you and Aksel and Isaiah just steadily picked people off. You will be that runner who dictates a race and can run from the front or drop a kick out of nowhere in the final stretch. Just keep working on your strength and keep learning with each new event and distance as we roll into track. Wenatchee on Thursday will be an excellent chance to drop some more time on the season PR and you can easily stretch for the lower 18s.

Isaiah: 19:19, 8th place. 1st mile 6:06 - 6:13 pace overall.
Guts! Like I said at Thursday’s practice, remember this one and know that you earned it! You drifted a little at the start… and then you roared back into contention like you meant it. All arms. All turnover. All lift and drive up that little hill on the back side of the gravel loop in lap number two. The only thing that kept you from another sub-19 finish was that slight indecision early and the gap to other racers that got harder to overcome. Still, you did an amazing job of moving from 17th all the way back up to 8th in that second full lap of the course. Impressed with your guts and your ability to make a mid-race correction. Trust yourself. We’ve got 5+ weeks of consistent running under our belts. You are looking good and ready to roll!!!

Tristan: 21:25, 21st place. 1st mile 6:29 - 6:54 pace overall.
Another great job out there under less than ideal -- but still better -- circumstances than your last race at Eastmont. Your push at the end was helpful to both the team and to your brother’s finish for sure. With another week of taper and care with your shins, I suspect that you will be ready to drop even more time on the Wenatchee course -- which is out fastest of the year. Then you can give yourself a solid week or two of rest!

Jackson: 21:30, 24th place. 1st mile 6:20 - 6:55 pace overall.
SO impressed! You took one for the team on Wednesday, and we truly hope that your gutsy effort in running with a visible limp doesn’t have lasting effects. Off to what could have been a perfectly paced low 20min/high 19min race with a first mile of 6:20 (19:41 pace). You looked strong and consistent until you had to muscle through it. Even still your determination kept us in second place for the day. Manson won’t know what hits them next fall when we are all back together and healthy! Hope that you are feeling better soon. Keep icing and rolling. One day at a time.

Kyler: 21:58, 28th place. 1st mile 7:09 - 7:04 pace overall.
Another PR. Near perfect pacing with a little bit o’ negative splits. Better than Tonasket #6 and really just 15 seconds behind their 4th and 5th. You are running with tons more confidence this year and getting stronger by the week. 21:45 and a 7:00min avg. pace per mile is well within your reach for the final race of the year. We’ll be sure to give you splits at both the 1mi and 2mi to help you push for it in that final bit. Great job Kyler and snakes are SO much better than worms!

BOY’S JV: 16 finishers.

Jayden: 23:53, 7th place. 1st mile 8:16 - 7:41 pace overall.
Terrific work in your first-ever race! Your time would have put you 38th in the varsity race and just behind Tonasket’s number seven runner. The difference between your first mile and your pace show that you were patient early but had TONS left to give in the middle to end of that race. An awesome showing in your first 5k and WAY better to speed up in the middle vs going out too fast and dying. This next week you can probably get out just a little harder and you will have even less work to do in catching people later on.

Madison: 28:35, 15th place. 1st mile 9:08 - 9:05 pace overall.
Very close to the same pace as your race in Wenatchee -- but on a hillier course with lots of loops and wind! Things are looking smoother and stronger. You also got into a good race with several runners early that helped to pull you through that first lap. The almost even pacing is also pretty great. Given your speed in some of our strides and 200 repeats, I have full confidence that a sub-9min paced, sub 28min race is definitely possible this week in Wenatchee. Congrats a great fierst XC season so far. One more race to go!

NCR Meet #4 @ Walla Walla Point Park 3/20/21

NCR XC #4 Cashmere Hosting @ Walla Walla Point Park 3/20/21

RACE COURSE: Walla Walla Point Park, Wenatchee - Cashmere ballfield variation. 5k. Excellent running weather and footing. Mid-50’s and short grass on firm ground.

HS GIRLS: 5k. 25 Finishers.
This one was out quick across the board. We did great sticking to our race plan of not giving in to temptation too early and running our own races smartly. As your coaches we appreciate this more than you can ever know! All three of you looked confident and strong and you did LBHS proud.

Liv: 22:28, 13th place - 7:14 pace overall.
I know that one felt rusty, but wow there is so much here I like as a coach! You were patient, you followed the game plan, you worked hard in the second half, and you held your nerves to a low roar throughout. So much success -- and really all we asked for in this first return to cross country racing since Fall 2019. It is awesome that your foot didn’t hurt -- let us remain grateful that this was a short-lived injury - and you certainly remembered how to race. You showed your senior maturity today and I really do believe the next one will feel better and by the next one after that, you’ll be feeling like Liv.

Lena: 23:39, 15th place - 7:37 pace overall.
This one is worthy of a super wow. Almost 50 seconds faster than your last race. You are right back to 2019 XC racing form and you look like it is more fun and easier (while still being hard, I know!) than ever. Terrific job finding someone to run with and really racing them. You are carrying your arms with a lot of strength and power and you are running tall and with confidence. You held off that side stitch and now know you can! Awesome job and fun to have you around for the bus and social time, too!

Sandra: 27:21, 22nd place - 8:48 pace overall.
So close to a PR! This one got out fast but you adjusted well and ran your race. As always your steady pace worked in your favor as you reeled in the runners ahead throughout the race. I know you were nervous and not feeling great before the race, but as soon as that gun went off you got right into the racing mode and never looked back. Once again you had a big finish kick and you made an excellent passing move up the hill to the finish. On Wednesday let’s work on pushing that middle mile just a little bit more and I think you can break 27 minutes!

Leki, Keeley, Ayeanna, Payten...
In cross country, there is nothing worse than feeling like your body is hurting enough that you can’t race. Thank you, all four of you, for sticking with it and still being an important part of the team. Ayeanna and Leki, you did the right thing to take care of your bodies and hopefully that helps you feel ready to return next week. Keeley and Payten your presence (and help with mile splits) was a big difference-maker for the team vibe. You made it festive and fun and just better. Thank you!

HS BOYS: 5k. 49 Finishers.
Very excited to see you all turn a corner on the season and to feel strong and racing people right on through to the end of that race. We looked SO much more peppy and spry than last week and I expect that feeling to only improve in the next two contests ahead.

Aksel: 18:34, 8th place. First mile 5:43 - 5:59 pace overall.
You ran terrific and smart again in moving up and passing people all the way through the race! 5:43 is a quick first mile, but you still moved up and chased people through the pack. A few missing runners from the race but you definitely out-performed your seed time/place and moved up quite a few notches against a strong field of runners. Fun watching you cruise out there and excited to see you match up with some League competition again this week.

Isaiah: 18:59, 11th place. 1st mile 5:43 - 6:07 pace overall.
So much better out there! A great plan with the ear plugs and you were focused, smooth and fast in that first 2 miles. You found your flow early, used your arms to set a great early rhythm, and put yourself right into the race in an excellent spot. AND you dished out some late race toughness in that final stretch up the hill. Did you pass the Cashmere runner back in a sprint finish? I was too far away to see it, but a great race over all and a fun finish that I am sorry to have missed.

Jackson: 21:27, 28th place. 1st mile 6:03 - 6:55 pace overall.
Personally, I’m pretty sure that something got a little messed up here and they forgot to subtract a minute from your start time. Your effort out there and your consistency after a 6:03 first mile looked a LOT more like 20:27 than it did a similar time to last week’s race. I did not get an official finish time so I can’t totally confirm it, but I’m considering that a season best and 50 sec. or so improvement on the season. You will have LOTS more people to race on Wednesday and it will be really clear where you are and what you need to drive through that final mile.

Kyler: 22:14, 32st place. 1st mile 6:59 - 7:09 pace overall.
Another week and another PR. You are finding a better and better balance between mile number one and the rest of the way. Awesome work in racing those two boys from Cascade and in pulling away from them in the final mile. You are using your arms to drive the pace forward really well and three weeks of dropping time is an impressive streak!

Madison: 28:28, 47th place - 9:05 pace overall.
Awesome job Madison! Of course it still hurts a bit and I wish we had more that we could do for your ankle, but you are racing XC and definitely working through the harder parts of it. A few more middle race surges and a little more awareness of where to go on your final sprint and you definitely have a shot to break the 9min per mile average at next week’s race. It’s another 2-lap course at Manson, so we’ll be sure to give you an exact spot in which to start a kick on the final stretch!

Tristan, Will and & Jayden: Wednesday we’ll run with a complete team for the first time all season. Can’t wait to have you all on the line!

JRH Meet @ Omak 3/20/2021

Distance: 1.5 miles

General Notes – The course is very flat and runs mostly on pavement or hard-packed dirt. The weather was nice, if perhaps a bit chilly. This course was very fast: everyone had their best pace of the season so far. Racing in the morning is something we have not done since the fall, so I thought everyone did a great job of being ready to go as soon as we arrived!

The girls’ team won, with a score of 18 points. 2nd place went to Manson with 37. There were 21 athletes in the race.

The boys’ team did not have enough runners to count as a scoring team. There were 23 athletes in the race.

Bodie – 8:40, 1st place. Average pace: 5:46. 1-mile split: 6:00.

Congratulations! You really got off to a fast start, which meant you ran most of the race in the lead, with a competitor right behind you. That is a very difficult position to be in, but you stayed strong the whole way!  After the mile mark, you powered up the hill, then held on just enough until it was time for your kick. When you did start your kick, that was game over. Way to run with everything you had!

Tristan – 9:24, 5th place. Average pace: 6:16. 1-mile split: 6:22.

It looked like you possibly got out a bit fast and you managed to hold on and have a great race! For perspective, this is your same time last year from our final race of the season, which is fantastic! It was great to see you find the inner drive to keep pushing, even though this was our second race this week. Despite going out fast, you managed to pick it up and drop your average pace after the mile, which shows just how hard you worked. Great job!

Marit – 9:50, 1st place. Average pace: 6:33. 1-mile split: 6:31.

Congratulations on your first cross country race! You got off to a strong start and then settled into a very smooth pace. Your opening mile was a bit faster than your overall pace, and that’s ok. It’s very difficult to maintain speed when you run by yourself for most of the race. Way to drive up the hill and finish strong!

Nella – 10:08, 2
nd place. Average pace: 6:45. 1-mile split: 6:49.

Once again, you looked super smooth the entire way through the course. You started running with Samra, but then ran a large portion of the race by yourself, with your eyes forward towards Marit. You maybe dropped off a little bit in the middle, but that’s ok. In the last half mile, you really picked it up and managed to bring your average pace below your mile split, which is awesome!

Samra – 10:18, 3rd place. Average pace: 6:52. 1-mile split: 6:53.

Talk about consistency! Your average pace was basically spot on your mile split. That means you maintained your speed the whole way through, even up the hill onto the levee. Great job on working with Nella towards the end, even though you got a bit separated earlier in the race. Overall, you look poised and ready to race!

Zoe – 11:57, 7th place. Average pace: 7:58. 1-mile split: 8:18.

First off, look at that time! You were only 23 seconds off your PR, which was at our final meet last year. And this is after only 3 weeks of training! Not to mention, you ran a good portion of this race by yourself, which means you had to internally find the drive to keep pushing. You really picked it up to close out the race and dropped your average down substantially. Then, you dug in and kicked all the way through the line!

Greta – 13:55, 16th place. Average pace: 9:16. 1-mile split: 9:20.

Wow! You had a phenomenal race! You’ve been putting in a lot of hard work, and it’s starting to pay off. From the Oroville meet, you managed to drop 1:16 off your average pace on a longer course! And to top it all off, it looked like you were having fun. Your average pace was a bit faster than your mile split, which means you picked it up over the last half mile into the finish. Way to hang tough and keep moving forward!

Layla –

I know you’re disappointed with how the day went, and that’s ok. That shows how much you care. Now, we get to look forward to our last race of the year and do everything we can to prepare. I know you’re going to have a fantastic race!

JRH Meet @ Brewster 3/17/2021 (Write-ups)

Brewster Meet – 3/17/2021

Distance: 1.3 miles

General Notes:

The course was very flat and definitely short. I did not list mile times as I could not figure out where the mile was on the course, so the splits I recorded were nowhere close to accurate. The course is split between soft dirt and grass, with a small portion on the dirt track. The temperature was in the high 50’s to low 60’s at race time, and there was very little wind, which means it felt very warm.

The LBJH girls’ team won with a score of 21. 2nd place went to Manson with a score of 34. There were 20 athletes in the race.

The LBJH boys’ team did not have enough to score as a team. There were 22 athletes in the race.

Nella: Finishing time – 9:49, 2nd place. Average pace – 7:33.

The duo worked well together again. A slightly slower start meant that you and Samra were able to move through your competitors throughout the race, and you both seemed very controlled while doing so. At the end of the race, you had a pretty large gap to overcome, and you still managed to almost do so, which is amazing! Whenever you have two runners who are so closely matched, you are both going to win some races. It’s a natural part of competition. You’ll get there next time!

Samra: Finishing time – 9:55, 3rd place. Average pace – 7:37.

As I mentioned with Nella, working together meant that the two of you stayed calm and didn’t slow down with everyone else. That is a fantastic skill to have. Nella was able to open a little bit of space at the finish, but that’s ok! Consistency has always been your strongest asset. We can work on finishing speed more in preparation for our next race!

Zoe: Finishing time – 11:44, 8th place. Average pace – 9:01.

You ran hard and had fun while doing so! I love seeing your tough face right as you’re about to start your kick. You were also able to move up through the competition and closed a lot of distance at the finish. While you weren’t quite able to catch up, the effort is exactly what it takes to get better each race. Seriously, you’re times this year are awesome and if we had a regular season you would be miles ahead of last year!

Greta: Finishing time – 13:30, 15th place. Average pace – 10:23.

You looked so much stronger in this race than at Oroville, which means your getting better every single day! In order to do that, you have to put in a lot of work, so you should be proud of how much you have accomplished! You got out to a similar start as the first race, and then when it came time to finish, you kicked it up a notch. Way to run all the way through the line!

Layla: Finishing time – 15:10, 19th place. Average pace – 11:40.

You also got out to a similar start as at Oroville and then you were able to maintain your stride even longer. That is exactly the kind of improvement we want to see! Consistency is going to be the name of the game, and each day we will get a little better at it. With one more race, I’m so excited to see what you can do!

Bodie: Finishing time – 8:04, 1st place. Average pace – 6:12.

Congratulations on finishing your first XC race! I know you were very excited to get out there, and you were fantastic! A slower start seemed to pay off down the road as you stretched out through the one mile and into the finish. You handled a small surge and kept your eyes forward, which showed great poise. Nice job!

Tristan: Finishing time – 8:41, 3rd place. Average pace – 6:40.

You spent a lot of the race running with Bodie, which meant you were in the front of the pack in the latter stages of the race. As always, you look super smooth the whole way. I don’t think you slowed down at all in the middle of the race. Then, you were able to hold off a late surge to secure your position in 3rd. Great job!

Malloch: Finishing time – 11:05, 16th place. Average pace – 8:31.

Another day, another consistent race from Malloch. You got off to a slower start, which meant you were able to move through the competition later on. Great job pushing hard through the middle of the race to set yourself up for a finish. And, as always, we got to see your stellar kick take you across the line!

JRH Meet @ Brewster -- 3.17.2021 (Pictures)

 Hello Liberty Bell Fans!

Unfortunately, race results have not yet been published, therefore I won't be able to do the typical write-ups. Instead, I'll post some pictures (courtesy of Haida) for now, and follow up with another post as soon as possible!
