Liberty Bell XC - NIKE Twilight Invitational
Location: Cedarcrest Golf Course, Marysville, WA
Date: 9.30.17
Distance: 5km Conditions: Excellent golf course running with a few softer sections - but WAY nicer then Wenatchee last weekend. Generally flat to rolling, lots of corners, with two big downhills and one longer uphill (in mile 2). Weather varied from beautiful fall to wet and slippery. A quick first mile and a LOOONG finishing 300m under the arches.
General comments: So. Much. Fun! And it’s not about winning two trophies. Loved the way that you all sprung into action as a group with our later arrival — and that camp was all set up and humming along when the admittedly rushed freshman/sophomore boys got back from the super quick warmup. Loved the glitter that is pretty much still all over the water cooler and will probably decorate Bill’s bus for the rest of the fall. Loved the “YAHOO!” cheers in the group circle at the end, and loved coaching you all at another wet and wild Twilight!
HIGH SCHOOL BOYS
If last week we reminded the rest of the State who we are at 3mi - we did it again in even more convincing fashion this weekend. We are deep. We have interchangeable parts. We have tested experience, and we have young and steady talent. We have kids who can drop 60 seconds one week — and then do it again the next. We have 11+ boys on this team who can legitimately challenge for a top 7 spot — and a very good chance at having most of them running 6min pace or better by season’s end. This is not normal. This is grand. We are finding center and we are testing the fringe. It’s a continued experiment in tolerances and pace for the next few weeks, but we are putting other teams on affirmative notice that WE are a challenge to the North West Christian Lacy’s of the 1B/2B kind. Two more weeks of good miles and hard work. A little more down in the dirt before the polish. Be on task. Help your team. Communicate with us and with each other. Then we put a shine on it.

30th place. 823 points. 34 teams. 268 runners.
Bodhi: 19:44, 110th place, 1st mile 6:01 - 6:21 pace
Like everyone below, a very good job of staying calm and going with the flow in our charge from the bus and right into a warm-up. You had even more and faster runners to navigate in this effort over last week in Wenatchee, and you are finding your groove and getting more confident every week. 1:45 faster then your first 5 at South Whidbey — and you’re not done yet by a long shot.
Andrew: 19:45, 111th place, 1st mile 6:02 - 6:21 pace
For some reason Andrew, they didn’t have a time for you. Did you wear a chip? You finished near Bodhi and looked to be closing on him in the final 400m — we just didn’t see exactly where you finished. All of that being said, another awesome step in the right direction. Loose again and fluid throughout, with more spring in your step then most round that final green into the finish. Let’s keep working on the distance base and speed at practice and you’ll be closing in on 19 minutes before the season ends!
Logan: 20:32, 147th place, 1st mile 6:20 - 6:37 pace
A big step up at Wenatchee - and then again here with another significant drop in that pace per mile. You outperformed our expectations for sure, and there are even more good things to come with a little more focused speed work at practice and maybe a little better coach planning so that we don’t arrive quite so close to the start!
Galen: 22:04, 204th place, 1st mile 6:32 - 7:06 pace
So impressed with this second 5k effort Galen. Tolerated the faster first mile way better that at South Whidbey, so the workouts are helping you adapt. With only two races under you belt there is lots of room to improve still too - but knocking 3 minutes off in one fell swoop is an awesome beginning. The kick will come in the next few weeks. The important part is that you gave it you best for as long as possible and you didn’t shy away from starting it early!
Erick: 24:41, 251st place, 1st mile 7:06 - 8:00 pace
Chalk this one up to a slightly rushed warm-up and a VERY quick transition from riding the bus to running the race. The stomach cramps will not be a problem with a little more time before your race and a better warm-up. A very nice job sticking with it even though you felt far from 100%.
HS BOYS JV JUNIOR SENIOR
16 teams. 233 runners.
Cade: 18:20, 44th place, 1st mile 5:37 - 5:54 pace
Yes! You looked back in the grove after an extended cold/sickness. Smooth and flowing, you found your stride and settled in to a great race. You were 34 seconds better than last year at this race, and 1:40 faster than South Whidbey a few weeks ago. All should be very strong confidence builders for the remaining weeks of the season.
Peter: 18:59, 69th place, 1st mile 5:49 - 6:07 pace
A whopping 2 minutes faster than South Whidbey. Your legs looked strong throughout this race — no loping in mid-air, but clear forward push. You used your arms well and you just, pure and simple, raced. A definite positive turning point in your season!
Lazo: 19:09, 79th place, 1st mile 5:55 - 6:10 pace
Congrats on a new 5K PR by 10 seconds. And, more than 1:30 faster than South Whidbey. And, really, you are just getting started! All that summer/early season work is paying off. You looked like your head was in the race the whole way. Your first mile and your overall pace are looking consistent enough that you can probably experiment with getting out just a bit faster and you’ll break that 19 barrier, for sure.
Tim: 19:32, 101st place, 1st mile 5:55 - 6:17 pace
Congratulations to you on a new 5K PR. And, you were more than 1:16 faster than last year on this course. You ran a very smart race this year — patient and with plenty of strength for the hilly section. You also had the kick of the day — those last 600 meters were incredible. You do an impressive job of not just changing gears for the final kick but literally changing your tempo, stride, and focus. That must have been fun!
HS BOYS VARSITY
5th place. 211 points. 28 teams. 197 runners.
Walker: 17:17, 21st place, 1st mile 5:18 - 5:33 pace
Another quick start and awesome that you can be comfortable getting out nearly 15 sec. faster then last year at this time. Terrific work in these bigger races in navigating the big-school heavy crowds, but look ahead to some smaller, but still quality kids when we get to Leagues and esp. Districts. You WILL have others to challenge from Tonasket, Trout Lake, Tri-Cities Prep, and Walla Walla. And none of those kids have put in you kind of hours. Garret Wilson from Tonasket in the hill at Leavenworth. Here we come.
Eli: 17:19, 23rd place, 1st mile 5:21 - 5:34 pace
A great race Eli. Revel in the depth at the top of our team - and know that you will get some good help from Walker too in the harder practices over the next few weeks. There is HUGE strength for us in the 1-2 punch of you two at the top. Performances last weekend put you right on Garret Wilson’s heels regarding 5k times (17:14 to 17:18) and you ARE going drop a hammer on things when you get a little rest on your legs in a few more weeks. Do the work. Trust the process. Remind the guys how deep we are, how fun that can be, and how much that matters as the season rolls.
Emerson: 17:39, 38th place, 1st mile 5:25 - 5:41 pace
Yes. Yes. Yes. Remember this feeling and bottle it up. No need to push for more in any kind of conscious way. Think about what went right. Remember the rhythm and flow of that first mile — and the guts to hang through the second half. That final little bit of finishing speed will come over a layer or two more of late race endurance. Great job Emerson!
Ian: 17:47, 44th place, 1st mile 5:25 - 5:43 pace
Some tantalizing info: you are currently the 4th fastest 9th grader in the 1B/2B State for 5k - and the 2nd for 3mi. Nothing special to do or celebrate — but just solid, consistent running that is doing wonders for our team. That being said, the beauty of this group is that we are deep! Congrats on breaking 18min in a pretty major way and on navigating a crazy nighttime race that was also hopefully a lot of fun. PS Happy belated birthday!
Simon: 18:47, 85th place, 1st mile 5:37 - 6:00 pace
Once again launching yourself into the race — fearless - and running strong throughout. Clear that you are thinking about your arm drive in strides and workouts — and it showed in that finishing surge through those final arches. A fast but not easy course, and nearly 2 minutes faster than last year is insane!
Nick: 18:48, 88th place, 1st mile 5:37 - 6:03 pace
Dropping another :55 seconds in only your second 5k ever. So much good here again with your determination to shadow Simon — and that hill / butt slide was absolutely amazing! MUCH stronger and smoother looking into those final 700m this week. A few less-quick courses coming up, but they will round you out as a runner and add a few more experiences to the tank. Keep going after it and congrats on another excellent race.
Travis: DNF, twisted foot, 1st mile 5:26
Good to see you in decent spirits after the ankle sprain. A solid opening mile for sure, but let’s try those spikes a few more times whenever we do strides or ballfield workouts at practice. You can adjust — and you’ll want that extra confident footing as we get into the District meet again at Wenatchee and then on to State.

Eden, Ian Dornfeld: Looking forward to having you all race again soon. Eden, I know that means on 10/13 at Oroville, but Ian - talk to us about Leavenworth this weekend.
HIGH SCHOOL GIRLS
We talked about this race being a great chance to run as a team — maybe not literally all together, but all together in our heads and with a focus on vying for the title, as much of a stretch as that seemed. Turns out you run AMAZING as a team—and you definitely gave the cross-country community something to talk about. A good one for NIKE to remember when it comes to the Border Clash :) Great racing. Great grit. Glorious groups! Worth putting in writing — a comment from Kevin Ryan, the coach at Sehome - it was the first time IN ANY RACE over the last 15 years that Sehome has been beaten by a school of smaller classification! If people didn’t know where Liberty Bell is from, they are figuring it out now. Lion pride all the way!

Keeley: 22.30, 30th place, 1st mile 6:47 - 7:15 pace
1 minute, 22 second PR over South Whidbey. So great to see you have a chance to run without a massive head cold. You did a terrific job getting out into a good position and you looked strong and in control through the whole race. Now that you can get back to running full workouts you’ll see your strength in that last mile improve and you’ll be ready to really let it rip! Excited for you!
Eva: 22:43, 43rd place, 1st mile 6:55 - 7:19 pace
2 minute, 22 second PR over South Whidbey. Best downhill running on the day - except for maybe Nick! You did such an excellent job opening up your stride, leaning in, and just going for it. Super strong kick, too, through those archways. You were flying. Glad the chicken costume, too, made an appearance. An excellent day, all around!
Lindsay: 23:40, 70th place, 1st mile 7:00 - 7:37 pace
32 second PR over South Whidbey. And breaking 24 minutes for 5K is no small feat! You worked hard and smart the whole way. It was exciting to see you find another gear over the last 800 meters, too. You climbed those hills with strength and confidence. Can’t wait to see you fly uphill at Leavenworth.
Lena: We sure hope you are feeling better because it’s not the same out there without you! We missed you on the starting line—but we know you’ll be back soon ready to set your own PR’s. This cold is worth taking seriously and recovering from — but rest assured when you get back, you’ll get right back on track!

When we talked on the bus, you couldn’t believe you ran 18:30 last year at this race — you thought that sounded so fast. Turns out, it is, and you ran even faster this year! You were in a great battle with a high quality group through 2 miles and then had Bear Creek’s Andrea Makezich right with you until the Archways. She had a quite a kick, but it definitely pulled you to a very sweet PR. Can’t say enough how terrific your approach to racing this season is — joyful, fun, and always gritty.
Gretta: 19:21, 7th place, 1st mile 5:52 - 6:14 pace
An 8 second PR over your State meet race last year, and more than 23 seconds faster than last year at Twilight. That’s just pure, flat out quality. You ran so tough today — battling sometimes in space alone, but keeping Sehome’s #2 safely behind you and starting to work on catching Rosie. You handled the quick early pace just fine and let your racing experience assure you that when it came time for those hills and the 3rd mile you’d be rock solid.
Ella: 20:01, 11th place, 1st mile 6:22 - 6:27 pace
I hope that race felt as good and as carefree as it looked! You were just wicked smart — getting out into a good, but controlled position and then just started working on moving on up from the mile on. Great uphill running. Excellent job picking up your teammate. And fierce finish. You are breaking time barriers every week. It’s fun to be on this journey with you! May that glitter always be in your hair! (2:34 PR over South Whidbey).
Liv: 20:13, 12th place, 1st mile 6:06, - 6:30 pace
You have this amazing ability to focus in and just go, no matter how much it hurts. Out quick in a big field and you totally held your own. You fought every step of the way in that last 1.5 miles —and it mattered! Congrats on a new 5K PR! Very much in awe of your grit and commitment to helping your team. It was inspiring to watch!
Athena: 20:47, 20th place, 1st mile 6:38 - 6:41 pace
In a race that went out quite fast, you ran remarkably steady. That meant you were moving up throughout the second half of the race and you worked well with Icel to catch those Sehome runners ahead—that had to be satisfying! Your monster kick tells us you can still give a little more in that first mile and get yourself in position to set that PR we know you want. Trust!!!!Those legs and lungs know what to do, just don’t let that voice in your head get in the way.
Icel: 20:53, 23rd place, 1st mile 6:38 - 6:43 pace
Spot on! You are running with confidence and such heart. Loved seeing you and Athena work together and just reel in the runners in front. Hope you recognize the role your leadership and your role modeling of approaching racing is having an impact. You do lead this team and you do so with grace and determination and an abundance of care. Thank you!
Lucy: DNF - feeling sick, 1st mile 7:08
This one did not go as we all wanted. That stinks. But, it’s also OK and no cause for alarm. Some days just don’t flow right. The best we can do is accept that, be kind to ourselves, and have the courage to believe next time will be better. It will. We know it.
